If you could summarize in one word what comes to your mind when you think of heaven, what would it be?
For me the word is: perfect.
More specifically: in perfect relationship.
Everything back in its rightful place, in order, functioning the way it was intended to function… harmoniously.
This thought is what has brought much joy lately as I struggle through my days living in a broken world, with a broken mind, amidst broken relationships, suffering a broken heart... He is returning and when He returns He will restore all!
We may try and fix things here on earth, but only Christ can bring full restoration. He knows just when that needs to happen. He will come and save the world. He’s the true Hero!
Before the fall, before sin entered the world, before evil… God called His creation good.
Before sin, people were in right relationship, naked and without shame.
All was perfect.
Including that we were given a choice. A choice to eat from the tree and suffer the consequences of that (death), or abstain, and remain in the garden with the One we were created to live for eternity with (life).
He didn’t want robots. He desired a relationship with us. Humans have a very special place in God’s heart… So He gave us a choice.
Now we live in the repercussions of the choice we made. We chose to live separate from Him. Separate from the One we need more than ever. We chose to know good and evil. We chose to be our own god. We chose to believe we know better. We’d be better authors of our lives. We chose to serve other gods. And boy, have we gotten ourselves in a mess.
The real harm of living in the repercussions of a fallen world is we turn to anything and everything to be our god (to worship). We were designed for worship, but it was God alone we were designed to worship. The worship of God was meant to fulfill us. We suffer so much pain when we choose to worship another. (Something tangible, something I understand a little better, something that will gratify my desires instantly, and give me fleeting joy)…
Little do we know how fleeting that feeling really is… until we are in the midst of it. And then we just keep wanting more, because we are looking for that high it once gave us. We are optimistic thinkers, we remember the way it satisfied us once, we keep going back anxiously waiting for it to do what it once did for us again. But it never will. We end up enslaved, worshiping another.
Our hearts break over and over again because that thing that we worship was not designed to fulfill us.
It will never fulfill us.
It wasn’t created to satisfy. It only was created to point us to Who will satisfy… Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
“You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing.”
Psalms 145:16 NKJV
Ask yourself today, who or what are you worshiping? Is it a person in your life? Is it your body? Yourself? Is it something you own? Is it a job? Is it your car? Is it money?
Is God on the throne of your heart? Confess, repent, turn to Him, surrender your heart back in worship to the only One worthy of it all. To the One you were designed to worship.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Proverbs 4:23 NIV
His promise for you today: Heaven
All at rest, no longer in want and wholly satisfied in Him.
