I’m not good enough… This is a tape that plays over and over again in my head day after day.
Just in case you are wondering why sadly I entertain these thoughts, this is why…
Because I don’t look like that girl in the magazine. I don’t fit into a size 0 anymore. I can’t run a marathon. I’m not the best at everything I do. If I am honest, and now your really getting a clear picture of what’s going through my messed up mind…I’m actually not the best at anything I do. Because I am trying to be what the world wants me to be, rather than living in the reality of who Christ says I am.
I believe this lie that there can only be one beauty… And me? Well I of course want to be her, but I’m definitely not her.
And so what do I do?
I miss out on the delight in looking to Christ, and I look to myself. I compare my strengths, my abilities, my looks, my gifts, and I… always ended up falling just short of the mark.
I’m human, and I fail. I fail to love. I fail in thankfulness. I fail to look to Christ rather than to myself. I fail to serve others. I fail in beauty. I fail in strength. I fail at being what I believe the world around me wants me to be.
That right there is my point…
I fail at being what I believe the world around me, the society I am immersed in, wants me to be.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Renewing of the mind… Looking to Christ, rather than to yourself, or the world around you to find your identity.
Maybe all that matters is what He thinks of me.
Angela Thomas (Do You Think I’m Beautiful?)
Why would I measure myself according to the worlds standards? No one will ever be good enough if they base their worth in trying to please others, themselves, or even world around them.
There will always be a better athlete. A more beautiful person. A more educated person. A healthier person. A wealthier person. I think you get my point. There will always be someone better… Someone that can run faster than you. Can bench more weight than you can. Can cook a better meal than you. The list goes on.
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
So why strive for something that is so far from life giving? Something you know and have learned through your own experience that it only leaves you empty?
It doesn’t make any sense, yet we all do it!
We live in this society that is saturated in ME, ME, ME. It’s all about me. I’m special. I’m a snowflake. I can do anything I set my mind to. We are always looking out for ourselves, our own good, it’s all about us.
Pride is ruthless, sleepless, unsmiling, concentration on SELF.
C.S Lewis (Mere Christianity)
WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?
Really if we lived according to the way Jesus lived… Our life would be all about OTHERS. Putting them first, their needs first above our own. Can you imagine a world like that? I believe we as human beings would actually thrive!
I imagine that would be what heaven will be like… Everybody looking out for their neighbour’s BEST. Not wishing the worst upon them. Serving one another in love.
We’ll actually be happy for our sister when she receives something we would love to have, rather than looking at her with bitterness and envy, wanting what she’s been given.
Let’s recall the two greatest commandments:
Jesus said to him, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love your neighbor as yourself…
So why do we short change our fellow sisters or brothers and treat them as less than they are. If we embraced each one of our unique beings as Christ does… There would no longer be division, envy, greed, covetousness. The body of Christ would become ONE.
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Really in reality as we seek to esteem others better than ourselves, we are feeding the entire body.
Giving health to the body as a whole.
Causing the body to flourish!
What if we did that even in regards to health and weight. Being proud of my friend for learning moderation in eating, or for losing the extra weight that was unhealthy for her? Rather than looking at her in pure jealousy, coveting her body, and telling myself I’m worth nothing; figuratively placing a cheaper price tag on myself because I don’t look like her.
So back to my thought about being good enough…
Yes to the world I am no where near good enough. But to Him… I am MORE than good enough. I’m the BEST.
YOU ARE TOO!
Not because of anything you have done in and of yourself, but because of ALL He has done.
Did you know Christ lives in you??
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10
